LPG Cylinder Price & Subsidy in India 2026 – How It Actually Works
A domestic LPG cylinder is one of the most price-sensitive items in an Indian household budget. Yet most people don't know how the price is decided, why it changes every month, or how the subsidy actually reaches them. This evergreen guide explains LPG pricing, the DBTL (PAHAL) subsidy system, the Ujjwala benefit, and how to check whether your subsidy is being credited.
How LPG Cylinder Price Is Decided
The retail price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is revised every month by Oil Marketing Companies. It is based primarily on the international price of LPG (linked to the Saudi Contract Price / Aramco benchmark) and the rupee-dollar exchange rate, plus refining, bottling, transport, dealer commission and applicable taxes. When global LPG benchmarks or the dollar rise, the domestic cylinder price tends to go up — and vice versa.
Why the Price Changes Every Month
Because LPG is largely import-linked, OMCs reset the price on the 1st of each month to reflect the previous month's average international LPG price and currency movement. This is why your cylinder can cost differently in two consecutive months even though nothing changed in your home.
Domestic vs Commercial Cylinder
| Type | Size | Use | Subsidy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic LPG | 14.2 kg (and 5 kg) | Household cooking | Eligible (DBTL/PAHAL) |
| Commercial LPG | 19 kg (and 47.5 kg) | Restaurants, shops, industry | No subsidy |
Commercial cylinders are usually priced higher and have no subsidy. Using a domestic cylinder for commercial purposes is not permitted.
What Is the DBTL / PAHAL Subsidy?
Under PAHAL (DBTL — Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG), you pay the full market price for the cylinder at the time of booking, and the eligible subsidy amount is credited directly into your Aadhaar-linked bank account. This system was designed to cut leakage, eliminate ghost connections and ensure the benefit reaches genuine consumers.
Ujjwala Beneficiaries Get a Higher Subsidy
Households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) — mostly women from low-income families — receive an enhanced LPG subsidy per cylinder for a capped number of refills per year, making clean cooking fuel affordable. General (non-Ujjwala) consumers may receive little or no subsidy depending on prevailing government policy and the price gap.
How to Check Your LPG Subsidy
- Visit your gas provider portal — Indane (cx.indianoil.in), Bharatgas (my.ebharatgas.com) or HP Gas (myhpgas.in).
- Log in with your registered mobile number / LPG ID.
- Open "View Cylinder Booking History" / "Subsidy Transferred / Not Transferred".
- Check the subsidy status against each booking.
- Alternatively, dial the IVRS number printed on your subscription voucher, or check your bank SMS for "DBTL" / "LPGS" credits.
Subsidy Not Credited? Common Reasons
- Aadhaar not linked to your LPG consumer ID or bank account.
- Bank account inactive or KYC pending.
- You voluntarily gave up the subsidy under the "Give It Up" campaign.
- Your taxable income exceeds the government's subsidy income ceiling for that year.
- Mobile number not updated, so notifications/credits fail.
How to Save on LPG at Home
- Use a wide-bottom pressure cooker and keep flames low — large flames waste gas.
- Soak pulses/rice before cooking to reduce burn time.
- Service the regulator and pipe yearly; replace the suraksha hose on time.
- Cook with lids on; plan multiple dishes together.
- Book refills online for cashback offers and to lock current price.
