PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026 – Free LPG Connection Apply, Eligibility & Benefits

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has given clean cooking fuel to over 10 crore low-income households, freeing women from smoky chulhas and protecting their health. Under Ujjwala 2.0, the connection comes with a free deposit-free cylinder and stove plus an enhanced per-cylinder subsidy. This 2026 guide explains who is eligible, what documents you need, how to apply online, and how to check your status.

What Is PM Ujjwala Yojana?

Launched in May 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, PMUY provides a free LPG connection to women from poor households. Ujjwala 2.0 (launched 2021) simplified documentation, added migrant-family support, and provides the first refill and stove free of cost in addition to a deposit-free connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ujjwala LPG connection really free?
Yes. Under Ujjwala 2.0 the security deposit for the cylinder and pressure regulator is borne by the government, and the scheme also provides the first refill and a stove free of cost. You do not pay the upfront connection cost that a general consumer pays. You will, however, pay the market price for subsequent refills and receive the enhanced subsidy directly in your Aadhaar-linked bank account, so keep your bank and Aadhaar linkage active.
Can I apply if my husband already has a gas connection?
No. A core condition of PMUY is that no member of the household should already own an LPG connection in their name. The scheme is meant to bring clean cooking fuel to homes that have never had a connection. If your household already has any LPG connection (in the husband's, parent's or any family member's name), you are not eligible for a new Ujjwala connection, though you continue to receive applicable subsidy on the existing connection.
I am a migrant worker without local address proof. Can I still apply?
Yes — this was a key improvement in Ujjwala 2.0. Migrant families who cannot produce local address proof can submit a self-declaration of address and family composition instead of formal documents. This was specifically introduced so that internal migrants living in cities away from their home state are not excluded. You still need Aadhaar and a bank account for KYC and subsidy transfer.
How much subsidy do Ujjwala beneficiaries get per cylinder?
Ujjwala beneficiaries receive an enhanced per-cylinder subsidy (higher than general consumers) for a capped number of refills per year, credited directly to the Aadhaar-linked bank account. The exact amount and the number of subsidised refills are set by the government and can be revised based on global LPG prices and budget allocations. Check your gas provider's portal or subscription voucher for the current per-cylinder subsidy applicable to you.
What if I stop getting refills because I cannot afford the upfront cost?
This is a known challenge — some beneficiaries return to firewood because the upfront market price is hard to pay even though subsidy comes later. The government provides options like the enhanced Ujjwala subsidy and, in some periods, special support to keep refills affordable. Booking smaller 5 kg cylinders, using the gas efficiently, and ensuring the subsidy is actually being credited to your account all help keep clean fuel sustainable for the household.
