What Is SSC CGL?
SSC CGL is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Selected candidates are appointed to a wide range of Group B (gazetted/non-gazetted) and Group C posts across the central government and its subordinate offices in Pay Levels 4-8 of the 7th CPC.

SSC CGL 2026 Eligibility
- Nationality: Indian citizen / Nepal / Bhutan / Tibetan refugees in India before 1 Jan 1962 / Indian-origin migrants from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar, Vietnam.
- Age limit (1 Aug 2026): 18 to 27 / 30 / 32 years (varies by post). Age relaxations: SC/ST +5, OBC +3, PwBD +10, Ex-Servicemen as per rules.
- Educational qualification: Bachelor's degree from a recognised university for most posts. AAO requires a degree from a recognised university preferably with CA/CMA/CS/MBA Finance.
- For Statistical Investigator: Bachelor's degree with Statistics as one of the subjects in graduation.
- Number of attempts: No limit, only age cap.
Exam Pattern – Tier 1 + Tier 2
SSC CGL has two tiers from 2023 onwards:
Tier 1 (Computer-Based)

SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus
- Reasoning: Analogy, classification, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, Venn diagram, paper folding, mirror image, non-verbal reasoning.
- General Awareness: History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Current Affairs, Sports, Awards, Books & Authors.
- Quantitative Aptitude: Number system, percentage, ratio & proportion, profit-loss, SI/CI, time-work, time-speed-distance, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, data interpretation.
- English: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar (error spotting, fill blanks, sentence improvement), idioms & phrases, one-word substitution, active-passive, narration.
SSC CGL Tier 2 Syllabus (Paper 1)
- Mathematical Abilities: Same as Tier 1, but tougher level and broader topics.
- Reasoning & GI: Coding-decoding, syllogism, statement-conclusion, problem solving.
- English: Cloze test, vocabulary, grammar, RC; tougher than Tier 1.
- General Awareness: Static GK + current affairs.
- Computer Knowledge: MS Office, internet, hardware basics, networking.
- DEST (Data Entry Speed Test): 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes (qualifying nature for some posts).

- Build a 6-9 month plan: 3 months basics, 3 months advanced, 2-3 months mocks & revision.
- Daily routine: 2 hours quants, 1.5 hours English, 1 hour reasoning, 1 hour GK / current affairs.
