Common Mistakes Aspirants Make

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prepare for UPSC while working a full-time job?
Yes — many successful candidates including IAS officers Tina Dabi (first attempt), Pradeep Singh and others have done their preparation while working. Allot 4-5 hours on weekdays (early mornings + late evenings) and 10-12 hours on weekends. Make optional subject choice strategic: pick a subject overlapping with GS (Public Administration, Geography, Sociology) to save time. Take 6-9 months of focused leave just before Prelims if your office permits. Avoid coaching classes; use online platforms like Vision IAS, Insights IAS, Forum IAS, ClearIAS, Drishti.
How many years does UPSC preparation take?
For a serious aspirant starting from scratch, a focused preparation of 12-18 months is enough for the first attempt. Most successful candidates clear UPSC in their second or third attempt — first attempt is often for understanding the exam dynamics, second for clearing Mains, third for fine-tuning. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, candidates should evaluate honestly whether to continue. Backup plans like SSC CGL, RBI Grade B, banking jobs, or state PSC parallel preparation are strongly recommended so you are not stuck if UPSC doesn't work out.
Is coaching necessary for UPSC?
Coaching is optional. Of every batch of selected IAS officers, around 30-40% don't attend any classroom coaching. They use online platforms, Mrunal, Vision IAS PT 365 PDFs, ForumIAS, Insights IAS. Coaching helps with two things: structured daily schedule (helpful for procrastinators) and answer-writing feedback for Mains. If you're disciplined and from a small town with limited resources, online platforms + good peer group on Telegram/Reddit can replace ₹2-3 lakh coaching fees. Self-study works if you can be consistent for 18+ months.
Which is the easiest optional subject in UPSC?
There is no "easiest" optional — every subject has its trade-offs. Most-popular optionals in recent years (2018-2025): Sociology, Public Administration, Geography, Anthropology, Political Science. Sociology has the shortest syllabus (~7 months of preparation). Geography overlaps heavily with GS-1. Public Administration overlaps with GS-2 and Essay. Pick based on (1) your graduation subject, (2) interest level, (3) availability of standard material in English/Hindi/your medium. Many toppers in 2024 chose Anthropology because of structured study material and high scoring potential.
What is the salary of an IAS officer after 5 years?
An IAS officer at the 5-year stage is typically posted as Sub-Divisional Magistrate / Additional Collector at Pay Level 11 with basic pay of ₹67,700. Adding 50% DA, HRA (16-24% based on city), TA, sumptuary allowance, and other perks, the in-hand take-home comes to ₹1,15,000-₹1,30,000 per month in a metro. Add accommodation in government bungalow (worth ₹40,000-₹80,000/month rent equivalent), official Innova/Toyota, free domestic help. By year 9, when promoted to Junior Admin Grade (Level 12, ~₹78,800 basic), the in-hand reaches ₹1,40,000-₹1,55,000.
