A ration card is one of the most important government documents for millions of Indian families. It not only provides access to subsidised food grains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), but also serves as a valid address and identity proof for various government services. In 2026, many states have made the application process digital, allowing citizens to apply for and track their ration card online.
This guide covers the three types of ration cards in India, eligibility criteria, documents required, how to apply online through state portals, the e-Ration Card system, and the transformative One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme.
Types of Ration Cards in India
India's ration card system under the NFSA recognises different categories based on economic status and food security needs:
| Card Type | Full Form | Eligibility | Food Grain Subsidy | Card Colour (varies by state) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAY | Antyodaya Anna Yojana | Poorest of the poor — no regular income source, destitute families, elderly living alone | 35 kg per family per month at ₹2/kg (wheat) and ₹3/kg (rice) | Yellow |
| PHH | Priority Household | Families meeting state poverty criteria, BPL families, SC/ST households, migrant labourers | 5 kg per person per month at highly subsidised rates | Pink/Red |
| NPHH | Non-Priority Household | Families above the poverty line (APL) not covered under NFSA but needing a ration card for identity/address purposes | No NFSA subsidy; may get state-specific rations at market/near-market rate | Blue/White |

General Eligibility Criteria
- You must be an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of the state where you are applying.

- You must be the head of a household (family unit). One ration card is issued per household.
- For PHH eligibility, your family income must be below the state-defined poverty line threshold.
- For AAY eligibility, the family must have no regular income — agricultural labourers, construction workers, rag pickers, cobblers, and similarly vulnerable categories qualify.

How to Apply for a Ration Card Online
Via State Government Portal
Each state has its own Food and Civil Supplies department portal. Common portals include:
- Tamil Nadu: tnpds.gov.in
- Uttar Pradesh: fcs.up.gov.in
- Maharashtra: rcms.mahafood.gov.in
- West Bengal: wbpds.gov.in
- Rajasthan: food.rajasthan.gov.in
- Karnataka: ahara.kar.nic.in
General steps (may vary by state):
- Visit your state's Food Department portal and register with your mobile number.
- Fill the ration card application form online — enter family members' Aadhaar numbers, personal details, address, and income category.
- Upload scanned copies of required documents.
- Submit the application and note your application reference number.
- A field officer or revenue official may visit to verify your household details.
- After verification and approval, the ration card is issued and linked to your Aadhaar. In many states, it is available as a digital e-Ration Card that you can download from the portal.
e-Ration Card and mFoodCard
Several states now issue digital ration cards (e-Ration Cards) that can be downloaded as PDF from the state food department portal after Aadhaar seeding. The mFoodCard app (in some states) allows beneficiaries to view their ration card, check grain allocation, and verify transaction history from their mobile phone.
One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC)
The ONORC (One Nation One Ration Card) scheme, implemented across all 36 states and Union Territories of India, allows ration card holders to collect their entitled food grains from any Fair Price Shop (FPS) anywhere in India — not just in their home state or district. This is especially beneficial for migrant workers who move to other cities for work.
To use ONORC:
- Your ration card must be Aadhaar-seeded (Aadhaar linked to the ration card).
- Visit any FPS in any state and authenticate using biometric (fingerprint or iris) or OTP.
- The FPS PoS machine will recognise your ONORC entitlement and dispense your monthly grain allocation.
