10-point Grade Scale (VIT & most Indian universities)
| Grade | Grade Point | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| S | 10 | Outstanding |
| A | 9 | Excellent |
| B | 8 | Very Good |
| C | 7 | Good |
| D | 6 | Average |
| E | 5 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail / Reappear |
Most Indian engineering universities including VIT, Anna University, VTU, JNTU, IIT, NIT use this 10-point grading scale. Some universities use slightly different letters (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, F) but the same 10-point mapping.
How CGPA Is Calculated
Example: A student takes 3 subjects:
- Subject 1 — 4 credits, grade A (9 points) → 4 × 9 = 36
- Subject 2 — 3 credits, grade S (10 points) → 3 × 10 = 30
- Subject 3 — 3 credits, grade B (8 points) → 3 × 8 = 24
Total credit-points = 36 + 30 + 24 = 90. Total credits = 4 + 3 + 3 = 10. CGPA = 90 ÷ 10 = 9.0.
CGPA to Percentage – Conversion Formulas
| University | Formula | Example (CGPA 8.5) |
|---|---|---|
| VIT / VTU / JNTU | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 77.5% |
| Anna University / CBSE | CGPA × 9.5 | 80.75% |
| Simple approximation | CGPA × 10 | 85% |
Important: Always check your university's academic regulation or transcript for the official formula. Some universities print the percentage directly on the transcript; if so, use that exact value for jobs and higher-study applications.
SGPA vs CGPA
- SGPA (Semester GPA): Average for ONE semester only.
- CGPA (Cumulative GPA): Average across ALL semesters completed so far, weighted by credits.
- Use this calculator for either — just add the subjects of the relevant semester(s).
