How WPM and Accuracy Are Calculated

WPM: (Correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The "5 characters = 1 word" rule is the worldwide standard.
Accuracy: (Correct characters ÷ Total characters typed) × 100.

Example: you typed 250 characters in 1 minute, of which 240 were correct. Then WPM = 240 ÷ 5 = 48 WPM, and accuracy = 240 ÷ 250 = 96%.

What is a good typing speed?
30 to 40 WPM is the average typing speed for casual computer users. 40 to 60 WPM is considered good for office work and most jobs. Professional typists, content writers and data-entry specialists often type 60 to 90 WPM. Above 90 WPM is excellent.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated as (correct characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The standard convention treats every 5 characters as one word, regardless of actual word length.
What is accuracy in a typing test?
