Typing Speed Test Online – WPM & Accuracy
A free typing speed test that measures your WPM (words per minute), accuracy and errors in real time. Choose 30, 60 or 120 seconds, start typing, and the test tells you exactly where you stand — whether you cleared the 30 WPM bar that most government data-entry jobs ask for, or higher.

What Counts as a Good Typing Speed?
| Speed | Level | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 25 WPM | Beginner | Just starting; needs practice |
| 25 – 35 WPM | Average | Casual computer users |
| 35 – 50 WPM | Good | Office work, SSC, banking entry |
| 50 – 70 WPM | Fast | Content writing, BPO, executive roles |
| 70 – 90 WPM | Professional | Stenographers, court reporters |
| Above 90 WPM | Excellent | Top 5% of typists |
How WPM and Accuracy Are Calculated
WPM: (Correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The "5 characters = 1 word" rule is the worldwide standard.
Accuracy: (Correct characters ÷ Total characters typed) × 100.
Accuracy: (Correct characters ÷ Total characters typed) × 100.
Example: you typed 250 characters in 1 minute, of which 240 were correct. Then WPM = 240 ÷ 5 = 48 WPM, and accuracy = 240 ÷ 250 = 96%.
Tips to Reach 30, 40 or 50 WPM
- Accuracy first, speed second. Slow down until you can type with 95%+ accuracy, then naturally speed up.
- Use all 10 fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Each finger has its own keys.
- Do not look at the keyboard. Touch typing comes from muscle memory — looking slows you down.
- 10–15 minutes of practice daily beats 2 hours once a week. Consistency wins.
- Take 30s tests often — short bursts build speed faster than long sessions.
- For SSC and other government exams, practise on the same keyboard you will use in the exam centre if possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good typing speed?▼
30 to 40 WPM is the average typing speed for casual computer users. 40 to 60 WPM is considered good for office work and most jobs. Professional typists, content writers and data-entry specialists often type 60 to 90 WPM. Above 90 WPM is excellent.
How is WPM calculated?▼
WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated as (correct characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The standard convention treats every 5 characters as one word, regardless of actual word length.
What is accuracy in a typing test?▼
Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed correctly compared to the target text. Accuracy = (correct characters ÷ total characters typed) × 100. Aim for at least 95% accuracy — speed without accuracy is not useful in real work.
Is 30 WPM enough for a job?▼
30 WPM is the minimum for many entry-level government data-entry exams (such as SSC). For most office jobs, 35 to 45 WPM is comfortable. Banking and BPO roles often expect 40+ WPM with good accuracy.
How do I improve my typing speed?▼
Practise the home-row keys (ASDF JKL;), look at the screen instead of the keyboard, use all 10 fingers, and do 10-15 minutes of focused practice daily. Speed naturally grows with weeks of consistent practice. Accuracy first, speed second.
